I did not expect this year to take me by surprise. What I've learned so far is that when people say "senior slide," they're just referring to a mentality. Senior year is not easier than junior year. The teachers give you just as much homework, just as many tests, you just have much less motivation to prepare as well for said tests.
I just got back from Thanksgiving break, a whole week to lounge about and generally do nothing. Over that time, I read the entire Percy Jackson series, including the Heroes of Olympus part. Although they are significantly below a high school senior's reading level, the plotline kept me hooked. A few other books I'm looking to read over the next few months include:
- The Law of Nines by Terry Goodkind
- World War Z by Max Brooks
- Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
- Aesop's Fables
- Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
- Divergent by Veronica Roth
- The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks
I've heard they're all fabulous, so if you're looking for a way to escape for a little bit, there's some ideas.
As far as college goes, I'm more confused than ever. My "short list" includes Gustavus Adolphus College, the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities, St. Olaf, and University of Wisconsin- Madison. I've already been accepted to the U of M and Gustavus, and have yet to apply to the other two. Since they're all pretty close to home, I've also been looking for somewhere a little further away, just in case I decide in the next few months that I hate the snow.
She was beautiful, but not like those girls in the magazines. She was beautiful for the way she thought. She was beautiful for that sparkle in her eyes when she talked about something she loved. She was beautiful for her ability to make other people smile even when she was sad. No, she wasn't beautiful for something as temporary as her looks. She was beautiful, deep down to her soul.
